Case Study #13 | Tapco Grain Buckets

The largest manufacturer of grain buckets in North America was looking for a lightweight, portable and cost-effective lifting solution to an innovative marketing program.

The Client

Tapco Inc.

The Challenge

Tapco wanted to show their customers how strong and rugged their grain buckets were by hanging the boss’ 8500-lb H1 Hummer from a standard bucket.

After contacting several portable crane manufacturers in the U.S., they found Easily Moved Equipment (eme) and asked if we could manufacture a lifting device that would do the job, not only at Trade Shows, but also at a customer’s facilities.

Having received NOs elsewhere, they were pleasantly surprised to get a positive response from eme.

The Solution

The solution consisted of a custom-height 5-tonne portable, aluminum Gantry Crane and a 15-ft. Spreader-Beam, rated at 10000 lbs, plus fold-down legs to aid in moving the Gantry Crane around to aid in its assembly. The most challenging part of the design was integrating a Winch that could be run off 12-volt batteries. The Winch and lifting system were designed so that the Hummer could be lifted and lowered at locations that did not have the power required to power a standard 5-tonne Electric Chain Hoist.

The entire system, including the Hummer, can be delivered to any site using just a flat-bed truck and trailer; it takes 3-4 people to assemble the Gantry, Spreader-Beam, grain bucket and wire rope assembly.
